NanoSphere: Centre for interaction and risk studies in Nano-Bio-Geo-Sociotechno-sphere interfaces

The rapid and promising advancement of nanotechnology (NT) require a concomitant expansion of the knowledge about risks - human, ecological and societal - related to nanomaterials (NMs) and nanoparticles (NPs). Increasing evidence show that NPs may have adverse effects, but the picture is fragmented and sometimes contradictory partly due to a lacking control on dispersion, physico-chemical descriptors and characterization, dosimetry and endpoints for NPs. These problems also spill over on risk assessment (RA) procedures and societal risk regimes. NanoSphere delivers frameworks, methodologies, both generally applicable structure-activity relations and case specific data, and approaches that will provide input for improving the adequacy of current RA practices and narrowing the gap between NT innovation and RA processes. Results will be of immediate use for environmental authorities, industry and other stakeholders.
