Unlocking the potential of fly ash as a secondary raw material through the use of LSRI

Purpose and goal: The overarching aim is to bring out new knowledge on the chemical speciation of waste incineration fly ashes. This knowledge can then be utilised by the industrial partners to develop processes to create added economic and environmental value from the ashes.
Another important aim is to show the capabilities of large scale research infrastructure (in this case Max IV) and how that can come to use for the industry. The target of the project is to achieve a good speciation of Zinc and Antimony in the ashes provided by the industrial partners Noah and Fortum Waste Solutions. Expected results and effects: XANES-analysis samples before and after two ash washing-processes generates knowledge on the changes in chemical speciation through the process. nXRF and nXANES will be used to identify new reference substances. The results will be speciation of Zn and Sb in ashes, an increased open reference library at Balder MaxIV, and a manuscript for scientific publication. The effect will be that the industrial partners develop their processes further to increase the yield in the washing/recycling process. Another effect is that the industry realise the value of LSRI and return as clients.
