A passive DAC system with alkaline by-products for negative emissions

In this project, Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg, Boliden, Höganäs Sweden, the Nordic DAC Group, KLIMPO, and Torkapparater will investigate the potential to remove atmospheric carbon dioxide using an innovative system for passive carbonation of industrial by-product streams. By utilizing low-cost alkaline residues, this concept could achieve cost reductions of 30–85% compared to more conventional Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies.
The proposed passive DAC system has the potential to enable carbon capture and geological storage on the order of 6 million tonnes per year in Sweden and 2.9–8.5 gigatonnes per year globally. The project includes experimental investigations, life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and design studies.
Furthermore, the proposed system will be demonstrated with a suitable industrial partner to accelerate technology maturity. A detailed communication strategy will also be developed to facilitate rapid scaling and implementation. The use of industrial by-products will additionally create new markets for large-scale residual streams produced in Sweden.
