Mistra Electric Transition (MET)
Research Project, 2021 – 2025

The vision of the Mistra Electrification program is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and efficient energy system, through the creation of actionable knowledge for a feasible and fair transition.

The program will help to realize the potential for low-carbon electricity to decarbonize industry, heating and transport; inform decisions taken by government and industry; accelerate Sweden's progress towards its energy and climate targets; and support mutual learning regarding the unfolding energy transition.

Approach

The one coherent core idea is to focus on electrification and sector coupling to "fast track" system transition in the energy sector and therewith, enable electrification and to phase out fossils in all industries, particularly the GHG-emission heavy ones:
transport, heating, but in the end also other sectors once the grid is in place and stable and resilient.
The aims are clearly stated, and a substantial impact logic model is provided. Tables visualise how the programme will inform and support the current political and societal challenges (based on IPCC analysis and regulatory goals). It is innovative since it combines econometric modelling with real-world experimental and survey
approaches, features a distinct WP on social acceptance, works with theory-based methodological approaches, and systematically includes all key stakeholders in different roles during the project (not just ex-post). Such a transdisciplinary approach is needed to tackle such large scale, highly political, urgent and wicked problems as the energy transition.
