Hydrogen-metallized slag - refinement and uses - HAGGIS
Research Project, 2023

Purpose and goal
The long-term goal of the prestudy is to recycle slags in a metallized form. The metallization is achieved by hydrogen reduction, preferably in solid state, without (or with minor) use of carbon. Recycling using our proposed route is especially desirable for slags without any alternative use today since we can avoid costs for disposal (in eg. landfills) and reduce consumption of virgin metallic elements.

Expected results and effects
The environmental impact is reduced compared to the situation today. Provided that the project (1) enables less or no disposal of slags, (2) enables less extraction of virgin materials, (3) enables circularity, and (4) provides more metallic elements. The result of the project (which represents a step in the development of the concept) is a mapped potential, with respect to the degree of metallization and properties of the remaining oxide mix, which can hopefully be applied in other areas of use.
