Evaluation of capacity limitations on the Swedish low- and medium-voltage power grids when meeting climate targets
Research Project, 2024 – 2026

The project’s overall aim is to continue develop an existing and unique model that generates synthetic low-voltage grids. The goal is to use the model for investigating large-scale capacity limitations in the existing grid when including new loads (e.g., electric vehicles) and electricity production and balancing units (e.g., solar and wind power, stationary batteries). The project will improve the model by adding: (i) more voltage levels, specifically medium and high voltage, (ii) new types of loads that are connected to the medium- and low-voltage grid, such as non-residential loads, public EV charging stations; and (iii) storage balancing technologies. A later aim will be to connect it to our current energy system modelling tools in order to create this “super” energy system modelling tool. Something that we now also are discussing with AI Sweden and several other actors. AI Sweden will be an important resource to the project by bringing new perspective on how to handle data and solving optimization problems.
