Digital Twin of the Construction Site – A Control Room for Production and Project Management
Research Project, 2025 – 2029

The purpose of this doctoral project is to investigate how a virtual copy of the construction site can be used to analyze, visualize, and communicate the progress of construction production in interactive AR/VR environments. By developing and demonstrating prototypes in case studies that combine data from 360-degree camera recordings, 3D scans, OpenBIM, and 4D BIM models, the project will explore new opportunities to support decision-making and streamline the construction process. A central component is the use of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), a new visualization technique that combines and leverages the best properties of both point clouds and 360 images. The goal is to contribute knowledge on how integrated and visually accessible information can enable more data-informed, proactive, and coordinated construction production.
