Circular Filler Metals: Using industrial by-products in welding applications (CiFiM)
Research Project, 2026
– 2030
The aim of this project is to develop circular welding filler metals (WFM) using industrial by‑products, while minimizing the use of virgin minerals. To accelerate the composition of such WFM, a newly developed AI framework will be optimized for welding applications. The optimization is driven by qualified weld metal tests.
Welding is the unseen backbone of modern society, and current filler metals rely on virgin minerals that drive resource use and emissions. Large streams of by‑products such as ash and slag contain valuable metals (Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Al) also needed in filler metals.
The project will reduce climate impact, increase circularity of by‑products, and improve efficiency and sustainability of welding consumables.
