Sustainable collection, aftermarket and recyling of lithium-based car batteries
Research Project, 2015 – 2017

The project aims at generating knowledge essential for the development of a sustainable system for collection, aftermarket and recycling of lithium-based car batteries (LBB) which pose new demands on supply chain management and organization for aftermarket and End-of-Life. The project captures a unique opportunity to perform research with industry relevance, as Volvo Cars intends to build up a centre in Sweden for coordinating the handling of LBB and enabling re-use/recycling. Volvo, Stena, JB, If and researchers at Chalmers and CIT intend to clarify what future requirements LBB poses on the infrastructure for aftermarket/recycling and the effects of the organization and interplay of the value chain. The results are expected to strengthen Sweden’s forefront position in recycling, favour electrification of the vehicle fleet and stimulate new working procedures under producer responsibility.
