Developing Wear Resistant Surface Coating Material for Mechanical Face Seal Application
Research Project, 2016
– 2018
The project aims to develop and evaluate the powder and the process for laser clad mechanical face seals subjected to wear. If the concept can reach the expected technical and economic performance levels, the commercialization of powder and rings together with possible needs for investments can be assessed. To achieve this goal, the coated components must be developed that combines improved wear performance with processability and high quality so that the full requirement profile (including cost) can be met. If the expected results of the project are achieved, Höganäs can go ahead and produce one or more powders (products) for sale. Federal Mogul can develop new face seals that have better performance than current solutions. End users will benefit from the improved wear performance by being able to extend service intervals, giving them lower costs. Both Federal-Mogul and Höganäs expect to be able to use the concept for other types of applications where the wear loading is similar.
