Process Integration for Strategic Development of Industrial Energy Systems, part 2
Research Project, 2020 –

The work during 2020-2021 will focus on development of Process Integration (PI) and Process Systems Engineering (PSE) methods and tools for conceptual design of resource-efficient industrial processes. In particular, we plan to focus on conceptualization and analysis of possible development paths for key process industry sectors, such as transportation fuel sector, chemical sector, and forest industry/biorefinery sector. An important aspect will be to continue to develop our international network through the Energy Sector of EFCE (European Federation of Chemical Engineers) and the CAPE (Computer Aided Process Engineering) working party of EFCE. In addition, we will contribute actively to several new strategic international collaboration projects under the auspices of IEA’s TCP Industrial Energy-related Technologies and Systems (IETS) including industrial excess heat (Task 3), electrification of industrial processes, and decision support systems for development of advanced biorefinery concepts. We will work towards increased collaboration within ECE (in particular Environmental Systems Analysis) in the area of Ex ante/early stage analysis of emerging biorefinery concepts by utilizing existing tools (e.g., ENPAC) and further developing of a methodological framework. In particular, we plan to apply such tools to the analysis and development of biorefineries in the context of circular economy, e.g., as distributed systems among multiple actors/stakeholders rather than just concrete value chains that secure holistic valorization of biomass. Furthermore, joint efforts around membrane separation, filtration and electrification are
currently discussed together with Tuve Mattsson (SIKT).
