Recycling of NiCd and alkaline batteries
Research Project, 2015 – 2017

Spent batteries are a secondary raw source of valuable metals. Based on the knowledge and experience obtained by development of recycling technology for NiMH batteries, this research project will be focused on the recycling of spent alkaline and Zn-C batteries. For development of sustainable technology for those batteries the investigation will be focused on the possibilities of mechanical pre-treatment and separation, and the possibility of metal recovery with a high purity by pyrometallurgical and also by hydrometallurgical methods. The utilization of the spent alkaline batteries as oxygen carriers to enhance combustion, reforming, gasification and CO2-capture of biomass with a closing of the cycle perspective (regeneration, re-use and recycling will be studied as well. The aim of the project is to develop recycling technology applicable in praxis with higher recycling rate than the current recycling processes.
