Demonstration of simultaneous cost-effective reduction of NOx and SOx in waste incineration
Research Project, 2018 – 2021

The project demonstrates a new technique for simultaneous flue gas cleaning of NOx and SOx. The technique seem suitable for small bio/waste fired units where conventional technology has difficulties to work cost efficiently, but potentially also for ships, next generation combustion processes, and industrial process with diluted flue gases. The process is based on a gas phase oxidation of NO to NO2 and a newly discovered importance of N-S liquid phase interactions. Lab-scale experiments combined with modelling has shown technical and economic potential and the project would like to demonstrate the technology in 1) technical scale (100 kW) and 2) pilot-trials (1MW). The project that is a collaboration between AkzoNobel, Chalmers, Yara Marine and Värmevärden with focus on 1) Technical demonstration 2) Economic evaluation 3) Understanding of the chemistry. A successful project would decrease pollution from the combustion of biomass by enabling cost effective flue gas cleaning.
