Sustainable materilas solutions for next generation high capacity batteries
Research Project, 2020 – 2022

The aim of the project is to pave the way for next generation high-capacity batteries based on truly sustainable materials solutions. It is widely recognised that high-capacity batteries are a cornerstone in the transition to electromobility as well as large scale implementation of sun- and wind-power. However, current state-of-the-art technology, the Li-ion battery, does not have the performance nor is it a sustainable technology to meet future demands. Thus, in this project we meet the challenge by research on materials for high-capacity batteries based on sulphur chemistry and sustainable active materials forming NaS- and MgS-batteries. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate a cell based on only the elements Na (or Mg) C, H, O, S.The specific aim of the project is to advance the understanding of fundamental processes in NaS- and MgS-batteries and based on this knowledge develop new sustainable materials solutions. Our goal is to introduce sustainable solutions in all parts of the cell – the electrodes, the separator and the electrolyte. The objective of the work is to investigate and unravel the functional mechanism in NaS- and MgS cells by in-situ and operando experiments and based on the knowledge tailor new electrolytes and electrodes that allow high active materials utilisation and stable cycling. Furthermore, we will through the project educate PhD, MSc and BSc students in technologies of future importance.
