SAXS/WAXS imagin of process induced through thickness layered polymer structures manufactured with
Research Project, 2019 – 2020

Purpose and goal: The main objective is to develop a methodology utilizing imaging SAXS/WAXS for processed induced layered morphology characterization through the thickness of injection moulded polymer sheets.

Expected results and effects: An important outcome from this project is to identify what relevant data to extract from the huge amount of data obtained during an imaging SAXS/WAXS synchrotron experiment, how to extract the data and report the data. Such a methodology would enable Tetra Pak® as a company to conduct imaging SAXS/WAXS experiments in synchrotron facilities more frequently. The desired future state for Tetra Pak® would be to control the final functionality of injection moulded details by optimising design and process settings in any polymer material given by an environmentally sustainable future.

Approach and implementation: The project is planned to be carried out in five consecutive project activities. First, sample preparation by injection moulding and microtome. Thereafter, planning for and performing imaging SAXS/WAXS experiments at SLS, followed by extensive data processing, evaluation, and analysis. As a separate activity, replicate the injection moulding process in a virtual environment. Finally, the results will be disseminated internally at Tetra Pak in cross company networks to demonstrate feasibility and usability of scattering techniques. Publications in scientific journals.
