A Functional Approach to System Design of Submarines during the Early Phases
Journal article, 2016

This paper introduces a new interactive approach for submarine design exploration in the early phases the SubParm model. This parametric model, used in the functions domain, facilitates an early and fast concept exploration of the design space in order to properly consider requirements and feasible options based on stated needs. The SubParm initial concept, the Play-Card, is a design description that includes a cost estimate with an overall form and a general arrangement of rooms. The Play-Card represents a valid and balanced design that can be used in an operational analysis model for system effectiveness calculations. These results are then used in the systems analysis process in search of best designs i.e., finding and designing a balanced set of initial requirements based on developed feasible Play-Cards i.e., initial concepts with their cost and system effect. The aim of the functional approach is to achieve a more rapid knowledge growth and to reduce errors early compared to classic ship design methods. This approach invites customer participation with fewer iteration cycles and better cost and performance predictions; this has generated higher customer satisfaction and acceptance.
