Findings from four research studies are presented, and challenges and opportunities for design are discussed. While previous research has commonly discussed the idea of designing interventions to encourage energy reductions, the insights gained through the four studies highlight the need to move beyond interventions and create enabling preconditions for energy conservation. Such preconditions can be created by designing products and services in a way that provides for less energy-reliant activities and makes them desirable for people in their everyday life.
