Established characteristics on artistic research have mainly focused on art's being sensuously experienced, expressed and reflected, but are now increasingly also linked to its sociopolitical and intersubjective-material agency, where art can act quickly to provoke or confirm established modes of thinking, making and acting in society and global economy. The article is grounded in the survey of artistic research conducted 2014 by the Committee for Artistic Research of the Swedish Research Council. It addresses structural aspects, tendencies and challenges in the artistic research domain involving its shifting disciplinary boundaries and cross-disciplinary thematic, changes over time, strengths in research methods and modes of communication, and contacts with other research fields.
