Optimal Placement of FACTS in Northern Power Transmission System of Vietnam Using an OPF Formulation
Paper in proceeding, 2007

This paper proposes a method to evaluate the values of FACTS devices in a power system in terms of loss and costs reduction, thereby allows for the optimal selection of locations of FACTS devices to return the highest benefits to the power systems. The method is solved iteratively based on an optimal power flow (OPF) framework, which is modified to incorporate FACTS devices. There exist many types of FACTS devices which could help reduce generation cost, improve the system voltage profile and minimize the transmission losses. In this paper, Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) and Thyristor Controlled Phase Angle Regulator (TCPAR) are considered. The method is applied to a practical power system in the northern region of Vietnam.
