A study of Le Corbusier's use of mathematics (mainly the Modulor system) and the relation between mathematics and architecture. Comments also on Carlo Scarpa's use of proportions and a discussion of the rule of proportions in general in architecture. The essay was awarded first prize in the competition ”Young Building Researchers” 1996. ”Young Building Researchers” was an annual competition jointly arranged by the Swedish Council for Building Research and the Swedish Board of Housing, Building and Planning. It was addressed to students at universities in Sweden who entered their master’s dissertation in the competition. JL was awarded first prize in 1996 for his work The mathematics of Architecture (Om arkitekturens matematik). According to the Jury’s statment it was a ”A very well performed work based on studies of an extensive source material”.
