Accurate Wire Antenna Modeling with RWG-Based Macro Basis Functions
Paper in proceeding, 2026

For wires in close proximity to each other or beyond the electrically very thin regime, the effects of circumferential components and variations in the wire surface current density become significant, and typical thin-wire MoM solvers might not suffice. This paper expands upon an existing formulation for accurate MoM wire modeling with macro basis functions (MBFs) constructed from full first-order triangle element basis functions. The MBFs reduce the unknowns relative to a general Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) basis surface MoM solution, while capturing higher-order behavior. Here, the MBFs are formulated purely in terms of RWG basis functions, ensuring compatibility with widely used RWG-based MoM solvers. Results demonstrate that there is practically no loss of accuracy for wire antenna port impedance computation, relative to the original MBFs. The results also demonstrate that for complex wire antenna structures the conventional thin-wire MoM can become inaccurate.
