Energi mot fattigdom i tredje världen - Sammanfattning av workshop

To increase the standard of living in the third world there is among others a need of a considerable supply of energy. Many achievements are demanded to create this. To discuss these questions Chalmers Energy Centre (CEC), the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) arranged in cooperation with Sida and Göteborg Energi a workshop September 11, 2007 about Energy against poverty in the third world. The aim of the workshop was to point out what type of achievements which are demanded to improve the current conditions. In the workshop the importance of energy to improve the living conditions in the third world as well as energy related emission issues were discussed. Different aspects of effective decentralized sustainable energy systems were also illustrated. We also discussed how to introduce new technology as well as the possibilities for Swedish industry to contribute. An important question was how to finance a development of new energy systems and the economy for such systems. In the workshop 50 persons participated from public authorities, organizations, universities and industry but also some politicians. The discussion stretched over a broad field but it strongly emphasized that the supply of energy was an important prerequisite for poverty reduction. It concerns for the industrialized world to understand the problems and contribute to a development which is anchored in the needs of the developing countries. The benefits that the women can receive from the improved energy access were especially highlighted. As along with the continued technology development, it is possible to provide the third world an accessible, reliable, affordable and sustainable supply of energy services.
