On the Throughput of the Return-Link Multi-Beam Satellite Systems using Genetic Algorithm-Based Schedulers
Paper in proceeding, 2015

This paper studies the sum throughput of the returnlink in multi-beam satellite systems. Considering bursty communication scenarios with different users’ data request probabilities, we develop an efficient scheduling scheme using genetic algorithms (GAs). The results are obtained in different cases with and without successive interference cancellation at the receiver. Moreover, we evaluate the effect of adjacent channel interference (ACI) and co-channel interference (CCI) on the performance of the scheduler-based satellite systems. As demonstrated, the proposed GA-based scheduler reaches (almost) the same throughput as the exhaustive search-based optimal scheduler, with substantially less implementation complexity. Moreover, the throughput becomes insensitive to the ACI and substantial performance improvements are achieved if successive interference cancellation is utilized by the receiver.
