From the mid-19th century on mutually close cultural relations, also described as "elective affinity", grow between Germany and the Nordic countries; they are severely disrupted by World War One. In this article the continuities and discontinuities in these cultural relations are traced – on the basis of the historical turning point of World War I –, in order to understand the different developments in the fields of architecture, urban planning as well as arts and crafts.
