Alicja Ostrowska
Alicja Ostrowska is a doctoral candidate at the Division of Science, Technology and Society, at the Department of Technology Management and Economics. Her work draws on Science and Technology Studies (STS). Her research is driven by the curiosity about how digitalization and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) change humans’ understanding of the world. She is currently working on her dissertation project ”Life and AI at NASA: An Ethnography of How Scientists and Engineers Make Tools to Explore Other Worlds.” The thesis is a case study of how AI changes understanding of life in astrobiology - a field studying life and its origins in the universe - and how that relates to wider societal changes. Her fieldsite is NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, in Maryland. She is doing ethnography with scientists and programmers who develop AI for future missions to outer space. Alicja Ostrowska is part of the WASP-HS project ”The New Scientific Revolution? AI and Big Data in Biomedicine” with Francis Lee and Shai Mulinari. During 2023, she was a visiting researcher at the Copenhagen University with the MeInWe group, led by Mette N. Svendsen.
