Daria Dall` Olio

Postdoc at Astronomy and Plasmaphysics

Daria Dall'Olio has a post-doc position at the Astronomy and Plasma Physics Division, in the Department of Space, Earth and Environment at Chalmers. She won an international fellowship from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) that allows her to develop her independent research plan at the INAF-IRA (Institute of Radioastronomy), in Bologna, Italy. She mainly works with interferometers such ALMA, VLA, SMA. Her research concerns the study of magnetic field in young stars by using emission from masers, dust and thermal lines. Magnetic fields are believed to be responsible of shaping the cocoons of the protostars where complex organic molecules, considered the building blocks of life, are stored. Understanding the early history of other stars and other planets is vital to answer the puzzle of our own origins. Daria is also active in science education and outreach and leads several projects to disseminate astronomy and other STEM disciplines in collaboration with planetaria and schools. One of her most prominent projects is “Costellazione Manga” where she uses Japanese comics and animation (manga and anime) to popularise astronomy and space science. Costellazione Manga has received an excellent international media coverage. Thanks to her communication skills, Daria was awarded the best presentation and the best poster prizes at professional conferences. In 2021 she was awarded the “Lara Albanese Prize” for the best outreach project by the PlanIT association of Italian planetaria with “The sky above us”, developed during the pandemic in collaboration with the ARAR amateur astronomer association at the Planetarium of Ravenna, Italy. In 2023 she was included as one the “faces of science” in the guidebook “Emilia-Romagna – Il Regno della scienza” published by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
