The primary break-up of most sprays relevant to industrial applications has not directly been observed. This is especially true for engine fuel sprays, where the spray formation region is too dense for established techniques to study. The projects I'm involved in focus on applying Ballistic Imaging to various sprays in an effort to probe the primary break-up physics and gain a deeper understanding of what controls the sizes of primary droplets produced by the spray. I study complex sprays more relevant to industrial applications and simpler sprays which allow specific physics to be isolated.
