Improved digital tools for the hydrodynamic design of energy efficient ships – validation, demonstration and introduction to the maritime industry
Research Project, 2020 – 2021

The project aims at influencing the industry's practice of ship design by developing and disseminating an improved methodology for the use of digital tools in the design of energy efficient hull forms. The methodology will be applied in two important applications and demonstrated to ship designers at shipyards and design consultants, in Sweden as well as globally. The improvements mainly cover three areas: i) calculations are made in full scale, compared to the model tests or model scale calculations that are common today, ii) the propeller/hull interaction is included in the optimization, iii) the impact from the ship motions in waves is also taken into account in the optimization. In this way, the hydrodynamic properties of the ship can be improved and the fuel consumption reduced.
