Boron nitride Enhanced Cement Based Coating
Research Project, 2021
Purpose and goal
The project includes a feasibility study TRL 1-3 with the objective to improve hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) "white graphene" functionalization technology for cement-based surface treatment applications. The planned work includes material development; hBN/cement chemical and mechanical interactions, development of production processes and the establishment of smaller demonstrators with studies of sustainability.
Expected results and effects
We expect reinforcement of the cement/aggregate structure of about 50% compared to the product without hBN for the properties: - tensile strength - flexibility/elasticity - resistance to chloride penetration Increased competitiveness for Lanark AB and Smart High Tech AB to organize a continued development project focused on industrial up-scaling and market introduction.
Planned approach and implementation
1. Characterization of hBN to requirements 2. Laboratory manufacture of hBN in aqueous solution 3. Study of up scaled manufacturing processes of hBN in aqueous solution 4. Manufacture of cement-based coating dry mortar 5. Mixture of anhydrous hBN in cement-based dry powder 6. Test of properties in the lab; cement-based paint without and with hBN 7. Painting of 1-2 smaller demonstrators 8. Report
