Distribution of volatiles over the cross-section of a fluidized bed when using solid fuels
Research Project, 2019 – 2024

The research proposed addresses a difficult problem, namely the cross-sectional distribution of volatiles released when solid fuel, e.g. high-volatile biomass, is introduced in fluidized beds. Volatiles denote the mixture of gases released when solid fuels are heated upon introduction in a hot fluidized bed. For biomass the volatiles represent the main part of the fuel heating value. The problem occurs when active bed materials are used in processes where good contact between bed material and volatiles is a key to good performance. This relates in particular to future combustion/conversion processes like chemical-looping combustion, chemical-looping gasification and thermal gasification. These processes are expected to be a key in meeting future targets for climate, environment and energy. The primary object of the project is to investigate the hydrodynamics of a novel concept called “volatiles distributor” in an 8.5 m high cold-flow model of a circulating fluidized bed.
