A new solution for performance and light weight of Electric Vehicle transmission gears
Research Project, 2021 – 2023

In the light of the increasing demand for Electric Vehicle transmissions, there is a need to develop new energy efficient solutions that also have an attractive total cost of ownership that meets customers’ hightened requirements. This research project studies a new solution for improving gear performance in terms of durability, efficiency and NVH as well as reducing weight. The solution involves examining a new surface treatment developed by Applied Nano Surface as well as a new shotpeening-based technique developed by Oxiso. The surface treatments will be applied to powder metal (PM) gears, which have lighter weight and improved cost and resource profile, and tested against conventional steel gears used as reference. Different test cases (steel, PM, surface treated gears) will thus be evaluated. Furthermore, different lubrication oils, including oils studied for advanced Engineering, will be tested to investigate the impact on the different surface treatments
