Co-operate on a human intervention study to evaluate the effect of a low GI diet on sleep and quality of life
Research Project, 2022 – 2023

The Parties' intention is to engage in research co-operation to evaluate the longterm effects on sleep quality and quality of life and their relation to metabolic responses of a low vs. high glycemic index (GI) diet as part of a Mediterranean diet. Chalmers’ scientific competence and expertise in human interventio studies to evaluate health effects of carbohydrate rich-foods form the basis of the co-operation. Rikard Landberg, Professor at Chalmers, is interested in health effects of carbohydrate-rich foods and wishes to conduct an extended study to
evaluate the relationship between quality of life and sleep in relation to metabolic effects of a low glycemic index (GI) diet as part of a Mediterranean diet. His group has extensive experience from conducting small to large human intervention studies to evaluate metabolic effects of carbohydrate rich foods. Areas of expertise includes effects on appetite, glycemic responses, cardiometabolic risk factors, body weight and body fat. Landbergs’ laboratory also has expertise in targeted and untargeted metabolomics and collaborates with world leading groups on the role of gut microbiota in human health. To conduct such a study, data and samples from a previous joint project will be used (the MedGICarb-study). Barilla is interested in documenting health effects of a low GI diet, where pasta is a major contributing food. The purpose of the activity is therefore to conduct a human dietary intervention study to evaluate health effects of such a diet. Most of the research work is intended to constitute part of the
education of postdoctoral candidates at Chalmers. The study described in this agreement will be conducted in collaboration with Purdue University, USA and in Federico II University, Italy.
