Biobased foam adsorbents for air purification
Research Project, 2022 – 2023

Purpose and goal
The goal of the project is to demonstrate that commercially attractive air filters can be manufactured with cellulose-based materials and with a production technique with a lower environmental impact: a wet foaming method that uses surfactants and additives. The current solution for air purification is to use air filters made of activated carbon. The purpose of the project is to help the actors of the value chain to focus on products from the forest and paper and pulp industries and to use production techniques with low environmental impact.

Expected results and effects
Air filters are used in air purification systems to remove harmful contaminants that can cause adverse health effects and damage sensitive objects. The current solution for air purification is to use air filters made of activated carbon, which have often a poor environmental impact. With foam produced within the project, the entire value chain will have access to a guaranteed bio-based alternative and products with lower environmental footprint and higher efficiency.
