Ice-going performance prediction and voyage planning of electric ships operated between Norrland and southern Sweden
Research Project, 2023 – 2025

This innovation project focuses on the concept ship’s ice-going performance, which was identified as one of the limiting factors. In this work, the applicants propose technical solutions for predicting the ship’s performance concerning speed, energy efficiency, and transit time. In particular, the ship’s performance concerning hybrid propulsion systems will be evaluated and the environmental impacts of the usage of various alternative fuels will be compared. In addition, a voyage planning tool based on high-fidelity numerical models for route optimization will be delivered from the proposed project, aiming for minimization of the total operational costs for the owners of the goods as well as the shipping company.
