SUSTAINIRON - Supporting a Systematic Transition towards a Closed-loop Recycling of Iron Resources
Research Project, 2025 – 2028

Purpose and goal
Today, a large variety of different steels and cast iron alloys are used, bringing an increasingly significant amount of impurities and trace elements. The aim is to (1) Create predictability by better understanding the effects of different trace elements and how these can be managed (2) Carry out a large amount of remelting of CGI to find ways to increase the amount of recycled material. The overall goal of the project is to develop better conditions for creating circular flows of cast iron.

Expected effects and result
Reduced resource consumption materials, energy and tools Better understand if and how pollution possibly affects the possibility of recycled CGI Increase the recycling rate in CGI to at least 50%

Planned approach and implementation
Analyzes of industrial process data and tests of sample components to find ways to handle various trace elements. Recasts of CGI where the material is examined through material analyzes and processing tests.
