Innovative breathing movement monitoring
Research Project, 2025 – 2026

This project is a pioneering collaboration between the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Gothenburg, and the Department of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, aiming to address a major healthcare challenge by developing an innovative technology for localized breathing movement meausurement.

Such a medical device is in high demand for detailed respiratory analysis in diverse settings, particularly for personalized treatment and rehabilitation.

Currently, access to this critical data is limited due to the high cost and complexity of existing equipment. The development of  a functional, affordable, portable, and user-friendly medical device that can accurately measure breathing movements at various chest and abdominal positions has the potential to transform respiratory care by enabling earlier detection of respiratory disorders, improved management of conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, and more precise evaluation of rehabilitation progress.
