Fas 2: Total BIM – En förutsättning för digital tvilling av byggprojekt
Research Project, 2024 – 2029

The construction industry is at the beginning of a digital transformation. From having been a sector where almost all information exchange was based on drawings and specifications, we now see how digital Building Information Models (BIM) can represent an asset from the sketch phase through to the operation stage. At present, however, two parallel processes are often carried out, where both drawings and BIM are produced during the design stage. Unfortunately, this means that BIM loses status and is deprioritized in the design process, since drawings are usually the legally binding construction documents. As a result, production cannot rely on the model, and the potential of the model and its information is lost during construction.

In recent years, however, a more production-oriented BIM process has begun to be introduced in a number of projects. These have questioned whether drawings are in fact the best medium for information exchange for skilled workers, thereby minimizing the number of drawings and establishing BIM as the construction document.

During Phase 1 of this doctoral project (SBUF 14063), knowledge and understanding were developed regarding the factors that influence outcomes when implementing so-called Total BIM projects. Total BIM creates a model-based and production-oriented process where production data is generated and linked to the model during the construction phase. This Phase 2 builds on that foundation and aims to explore how Total BIM can generate additional value – that is, can we use and create added value from the production data linked to the model during construction?
