Quantitative Single-Molecule Microscopy to Advance Biomedicine
Research Project, 2025
– 2026
We outline the creation of a Swedish Excellence Cluster in for the advancement of single-molecule optical microscopy, driven by collaborative innovation. By leveraging the strengths of interdisciplinary research teams, integrating technology development and shared research facilities, and fostering global partnerships, the initiative aims to advance single-molecule microscopy, nano- and microfluidics and machine learning-based data analysis for life sciences and biomedicine. Through stakeholder mapping, strategic recruitment, and training programs, early engagement with end users is prioritized, ensuring technological breakthroughs are relevant and impactful. Infrastructure gap analysis, social sciences and humanities integration, and consultation with industry and academic partners will guide strategic investments and governance. The result will be an actionable roadmap detailing key technological needs and research themes to fill existing gaps, organizational structure, and plans for education, outreach, and interdisciplinary growth. The proposed collaborative innovation model is envisioned to accelerate progress, positioning Sweden as a leader in responsible, world-class quantitative single molecule optical microscopy research and making these cutting-edge technologies widely accessible to academia, industry, and the biomedical community.
