Reversing BIOdiversity decline in DENsification strategies using innovative sensing, systemic solutions and data driven CITY modelling for transformative change
Research Project, 2025 – 2028

BIODENCITY addresses biodiversity loss by promoting urban densification strategies that integrate greening into dense cityscapes. It challenges conventional planning focused mainly on decarbonization, proposing a balanced approach that combines built density with biodiversity to support planetary and human health. The project explores how densification can coexist with nature using bio-sensing, data-driven modeling, and systemic solutions. Machine learning, acoustic and visual monitoring, and citizen science is used to track biodiversity—especially microorganisms, insects, bats, and birds—across European urban areas.Moving beyond the "land sparing vs. land sharing" debate, BIODENCITY adopts a multi-scalar approach that embeds biodiversity into urban design, enhancing ecosystem stability and urban resilience. It addresses the overlooked fine scales at which biodiversity operates, especially in relation to human well-being.Three core innovations guide the project:Biodiversity in dense urban settingsAdvanced sensing, co-monitoring, and mappingCo-creation of planning and policy solutionsEngaging planners, policymakers, and citizens, BIODENCITY links research and practice to create biodiversity-friendly urban strategies. Its collaborative, evidence-based approach supports sustainable, resilient cities and healthier urban life.
