Roll-to-Roll Microwave Drying for Next-Generation Battery Electrode Manufacturing (R2R-MICROBAT)
Research Project, 2026 – 2028

R2R-MICROBAT aims to scale up and demonstrate an energy-efficient roll-to-roll microwave drying process for battery electrode manufacturing. The project will advance the technology from TRL 5 to TRL 8, targeting up to 80% lower drying energy consumption while maintaining electrode quality and process stability. The goal is to enable low-carbon, scalable, and industrially relevant battery manufacturing in Sweden and Europe.

The project will deliver a pilot-scale roll-to-roll microwave drying system validated at TRL 8 for battery electrode manufacturing. Expected impacts include up to 80% lower drying energy consumption, reduced production footprint and CO₂ emissions, improved industrial competitiveness, and strengthened Swedish capability in sustainable battery manufacturing technologies.
