Smarta gröna gatunät
Research Project, 2026
– 2029
Smart Green Grids is an implementation-oriented innovation project that develops the street network in Nyhamnen,Malmö, as a system solution for circularity, sustainable mobility, and climate adaptation. The project builds on theresearch program Smarta gator (Smart Streets) and is carried out by Spacescape, Kaminsky Arkitektur, Sydväst, Chalmers University of Technology, the City of Malmö, and Veg Tech.
The street network is the city’s central public realm and infrastructure, with the potential to coordinate stakeholders, enable circular material flows, integrate mobility and nature-based solutions, and create more inclusive and attractiveurban environments. In Nyhamnen, the street network can serve as the structural backbone for addressing the area’scomplex challenges: integrating economic and sustainability goals, managing climate risks, and supporting vibrant urbanlife.
The project comprises eight work packages: international benchmarking, dialogue and collaboration, site analysis, a streetdevelopment plan, street design, construction of test streets, evaluation, and communication. The work addresses thecall’s five system dimensions—technology, business models, infrastructure, rules, and norms—and challenges currentpractices for how streets are planned, built, and used.
Through a new street planning model and innovative climate-adaptive planting systems, the project develops newplanning and implementation processes that can be scaled locally and nationally.
