MYCO-PAN Bio-fabricated Mycelium,Cellulose and Biomineralizing Bacteria-Based Interior and Exterior Panels for a more sustainable and Beautiful Construction Ecosystem
Research Project, 2026 – 2030

MYCO-PAN aims to advance the construction sector by developing and validating innovative bio-fabricated materials primarily based on mycelium, bacterial cellulose, biomineralising bacteria, and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), for use in sustainable and beautiful building components. Addressing the urgent need to reduce CO2 emissions and waste in construction, the project integrates advanced biological processes with digital design and manufacturing, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) and 3D printing, to create two main products: lightweight interior panels with superior thermal and acoustic properties, and robust, mineralised exterior panels with enhanced fire and weather resistance. Both products will be validated at TRL5, demonstrating technical performance, regulatory readiness, affordability, and social acceptance.
MYCO-PAN’s approach is deeply aligned with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) principles of beauty, sustainability, and togetherness. The project will implement a comprehensive, multi-cycle sustainability assessment framework, integrating environmental, economic, social, and aesthetic dimensions, and will actively engage stakeholders and local communities through participatory co-design and demonstration activities. The consortium, comprising leading European research institutes, technology developers, architects, and industry partners, will ensure robust implementation and high impact across the value chain. By bridging scientific innovation, digital tools, and social engagement, MYCO-PAN will set new benchmarks for circular, climate-neutral construction, supporting the EU Green Deal and accelerating the adoption of bio-fabricated solutions in Europe and beyond.
