Hydrogen-based fuel cell system for drone applications
Research Project, 2026 – 2027

Today's drones are limited by the short battery life, which limits their use in logistics, emergency services and long-range surveillance. These limitations become even greater in Nordic conditions, where low temperatures significantly reduce battery performance. The project develops a lightweight, air-cooled hydrogen fuel cell system with a closed cathode architecture that enables drones to fly three times longer than battery-powered systems and operate reliably down to -20 °C — conditions where both today's batteries and existing fuel cell solutions are not sufficient. The technology supports the transport of medical samples, logistics to remote islands, infrastructure inspection, forest surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Through extended flight time and fast refueling, the project enables more sustainable and reliable drone operations. With a European supply chain, the project also strengthens Sweden's position in hydrogen technology and advanced mobility.
