Environmental geographic information systems (GIS) for building stocks and urban structures: phase II
Research Project, 2011 – 2014

This request refers to a continuation employment for Dr. Liane Thuvander as an assistant professor (forskarassistent) at Chalmers University of technology. In appendix E results from period I are described. The aim of the project is to further develop research on building stock modeling and to develop space-time GIS applications for urban structures. The focus is on data capture, i.e. establishment of the EBSIS database, and the visualization of structural and environmental building data. For data capture, field studies of existing buildings are carried out. Additional data sources are aerial photos, statistics, real estate managers and suppliers. Visualization strategies are developed by linking GIS and building stock modeling concepts and, by that, to support communication of environmental data and to provide an improved basis for decision-making towards a sustainable management of existing buildings. Expected results are a database prototype including simulation and analysis tool with a high degree of visualization accessible for researchers and actors in the building sector. The integration of the research project into research and education activities at Chalmers are an important part. In the end the results from the assistant professor employment period will form the basis for an application as associate professor.
