On Board Charger (OBC) for fast charging
Research Project, 2013 – 2015

There are no global solutions for OBC for PHEV & no standard for fast charging. Battery input voltage (115-500V), which works for car does not work for heavy vehicles. Few players in the fast chargers market, eg 3-phase 32A 22kW. PHEV forecast 2020 global reach 1-1.5M, where fast charger is a smaller share. Infrastructure & systems for charging heavy vehicles is also important. Inductive transmission of energy, require also a rectifier in vehicles. Either or it becomes very large investments. The goal is to explore the possibility of finding a modular building architecture. Where input voltage can be 1-3-phase AC, boosted DC charging or rectifiers for inductive transfer. Output voltage can be 375V (car) or 750V (heavy vehicles). The aim is to find synergies volume, the same modules can be used for both passenger & commercial vehicles. If the introduction of the PHEV accelerate, the energy efficiancy increase. PHEV bus provides e.g. a decreased fossil fuel consumption of 1.5-2 l/h.
