Digitalization and energy conservation: Opportunities, barriers and business models to unlock technological potential
Research Project, 2017
– 2019
Today, the pulp and paper industry is ready to absorb the energy efficiency opportunities brought forth by "digitalization" - the fourth industrial revolution. The opportunities digitalization brings are enormous. Previous research funded by the Swedish Energy Agency demonstrates a significant savings potential as a result of new technologies - often in the order of 30-50% reduced energy consumption. We also know that it takes a long time for energy-saving technologies to gain a foothold in the Swedish pulp and paper industry. In this project proposal, we will focus on (1) digitalization opportunities with regard to energy savings; (2) internal and external barriers and motivations to implement energy-saving technologies; and (3) business models that unlock the energy saving potential of digitalization. The studies will be carried out in cooperation with Stora Enso Skoghall. Additional plants within Stora Enso will participate (inkind contracts will be signed soon).
