Kvävekemi i kemcyklisk förbränning och i förbränning med syrebärare
Research Project, 2017 – 2021

Chemical-looping combustion is a novel principle for converting hydrocarbon fuels, based on a transfer of oxygen from air to fuel using oxygen-carriers of metal oxide. In this process the normal and well-known mechanisms of NO formation in combustion are likely irrelevant, instead NO  forms in the interaction of the oxygen carrier with nitrogen-containing compounds released from the fuel. Despite extensive research on this novel combustion process, there have been very few studies related to the nitrogen chemistry in chemical-looping. Thus, this novel route of NO formation is not well known or understood. It is the purpose of the work to address this lack of understanding. The work is also highly relevant for a novel method to improve combustion in fluidized-beds using similar oxygen carrier materials, oxygen-carrier aided combustion (OCAC). The work involves investigation and understanding of the effect of different oxygen carriers, investigation of the interaction of oxygen carrier in operation with biomass fuels, and investigation and understanding the effect of reaction conditions. The latter includes temperature, oxygen carrier conversion, and the presence of various reducing/oxidized gases. Further the study involves an understanding of reaction paths, investigation of kinetics, modelling of the reactions using kinetics and validation of modelling with pilot plant data.  Finally, nitrogen chemistry in the so-called oxy-polishing step will be investigated.
