Big Data Processing in the context of Smart Buildings,
Research Project, 2016 – 2017

In this project we investigate the applicability of the stream processing technologies being developed by the Distributed Computing and Systems Research group to data
streaming challenges detected in the context of smart buildings. In many domains, and in particular smart buildings, large amounts of data are produced and need to be analyzed to provide support to solving domain-specific challenges. However, such analysis is a challenge in itself as the required expertise is interdisciplinary. With this project, we investigate such challenges by bringing together the expertise from computer science (distributed and parallel computations in a
private and secure fashion) with experts from building technology. In particular, we are going to identify and understand challenges in thermal energy storage, such as controlling refrigerators/freezers in supermarkets, and evaluate their suitability to be further investigated in the project.
