Novel Steels for Lead-Cooled Generation 4 Nuclear Reactors
Research Project, 2017 – 2020

Liquid lead, as used in one of the generation 4 nuclear reactor concepts, is a harsh environment posing a challenge for the materials in contact with the lead. Here we will expose steel to liquid lead and apply advanced characterization tools to understand the degradation, as well as using atomistic modelling to further understand the mechanisms involved. The aim is also to develop new steel types with improved properties in liquid lead.
