Experiments and modeling of two-phase flow in energy conversion, part 2
Research Project, 2020
–
On one side it is planned to focus on activities within challenge-driven modelling of biomass conversion together with our current industrial partners. The current 3D based model will be complemented with a 1D model of the reactor and a tool for transient simulation which integrates both gas and water sides in a power plant to evaluate the ability of different designs to meet lower
minimum loads and dynamic demand curves. This is to address the challenge of increased value of flexibility of dispatchable heat and power generation to facilitate efficient integration of non-dispatchable electricity generation such as wind and solar power. Parallel to this, efforts will be made to expand the scope of the collaboration to new partners as well as applications of the fluidized bed technology in energy conversion (e.g. industrial-scale for energy storage and handling of flexible demand). In expanding the scope and partners of this collaboration, we have unique resources to
address new challenges by means of the modelling tools developed under many years. Thus, we should be able to position us in the forefront to address main challenges and knowledge gaps of
novel applications in the area of thermal conversion systems. We think the best way of using the funding is for part funding of one postdoc and additional project workers on temporary contracts.
Senior researchers involved are Filip Johnsson and David Pallarès. The postdoc will be employed at the department of Space, Earth and Environment.
